marble slab ice cream, evanston

Some time ago I had posted looking for info on this ice cream place that opened across from the landmark theater in evanston. it opened very recently and last night there was a line out the door.

The place proclaims that each franchise makes its premium ice cream and waffle cones on site, and also its frozen marble slab for mixins.

There are about 15 flavors, each very rich, but not assertively flavored (with the exception of the lemon custard I tried) because the schtick here is the mix-in on the slab and I guess if the flavors were stronger the mixins wouldn't go as well. The family tried in addition to the lemon custard, peanut butter, vanilla bean, and "sweet cream" which is really the base ice cream of all the other flavors - it was my favorite, buttery rich, and not very sweet

A couple minor gripes: about those waffle cones, they offer a number of different dips and flavors, but they didn't on the ones we tried out have much real flavor to them and more annoyingly feature a large nickel-size whole in the bottom for your ice-cream to leak out of.

Maybe because it was new and the line was long of folks who have never been there before and were tasting flavors and the staff hadn't had a chance to get into a groove of doing the mix-ins on the slab, the line moves glacially. I think it will get a little quicker as the newness wears off the but the slab mixin thing ensures that it will stay a little slow

also did i mention it's kinda steep for a waffle cone - $3.50

Not bad for after a movie, but I think I'll stick to village creamery and further afield (for me) the penguin
