Manyda (N downtown Oakland) initial report

I finally managed to catch up with an ex-coworker who keeps "forgetting" our lunch plans, and we had a late lunch at Manyda. Even at 1pm, the restaurant was almost full - seemed to be a good sign?

He ordered #20, a silver noodle dish that looked okay (and he said tasted good).

I ordered the Panang Beef. Now, I should have known this would not be your tender stewed meat, since they give you three choices for the meat. But this was nothing like any panang I've had before.

Strips of meat, mushrooms, onions, and bell peppers (red and green). The vegetables were undercooked to the point where the onions were almost painful. Add to this a soupy broth with a vague hint of panang/peanut flavors, some flecks of hot peppers, and two basil leaves.

All I can say is bleah. Very disappointing. I'm still trying to rinse the flavor out of my mouth... something I've never had to do at a Thai restaurant. At least it was cheap ($5.25).

I have a previous engagement to eat there again on Wednesday. I'll give it another try; hopefully the soups will be good. After all, it smells good from the outside. But my initial impression was not favorable.
