Yippeee!!! New food in SCV that isn't a chain, isn't boring, is delicous and has friendly staff!
This may now be my favorite place in the area. I went in this morning to get a snack while running errands and got a Lahmahoun and baklava. I devoured both delicious items and kept thinking about them while doing my errands. Errands done, I decided to go back and get some items to eat over the weekend - Yay! I don't have to cook! I love lahmajoun and am very happy to have this in the area, I wish it was closer to my house.
The staff was very nice ,and when someone came in and wasn't familiar with the food, and asked about the Zaatar, the woman behind the counter gave her a sample.
Here is what we just ate for dinner - everything reheated nicely after a couple minutes in the oven. I've tried to include descriptions so that people unfamiliar with this type of cuisine have a better idea of what its like! Also see pictures I posted.
Zaatar Manaish - a puffier flatbread with olive oil and Zaatar (which is a spice mixture of salt, wild thyme, and I believe sumac) Very delicious!
Boereg - kind of a turnover or middle eastern calzone if you will. got a regular cheese and a spinach. Spinach has spinach that was sauteed with onions and spices. Cheese had onions and mint. It was a firm cheese that didn't get stringy when reheated and it. Big enough to fill you.
Lahmajoun - Think thin pizza. A very thin flatbread wtih a mixture of meat, onions and spices which is ground up to a paste and spread thinly on the bread. You would need a couple of these to fill you up, or they make a great appetizer cut into wedges.
In talking to the staff it is evident they take great pride in everything being fresh - I wanted a spicy cheese boreg, but they didn't have any that were made that morning, and they didn't want to sell me the ones from yesterday.
You should also try the Jallab - a date syrup drink. I'd never tried it before but I am so glad I did! It has the flavors of dates, and rosewater and was very refreshing on such a hot day!
the boyfriend who wasn't familiar with any of these items, declared them all really good and he'd definitely like food from there again.
Its on Sierra Hwy just down the Street From Costco. This will be a must go to every time I'm at Costco, and should be for you too! The items are all reasonably priced and so worth it. FYI Cash only right now.
