We got the train into town, intending to do a bit of shopping in Chinatown. And have lunch, of course. It’s a goodly while since I’ve been to Red Chilli – partly because we’ve been too busy ticking off new places from our list and partly because of the two Chinatown Sichuan places, “Red & Hot” had become my new favourite.
Knowing the portion sizes here, we skipped starters and went straight for the mains (Red Chilli is the only place I know where I’ve seen a doggy bag requested and supplied). Mine was the perfectly descriptive “Sauteed shredded pork with sweet and spicy garlic sauce”. They undersell the “spicy” in this and my lips were left nicely tingling for several minutes after we left. Not as hot as the famed poached lamb dish, but pretty hot. There was a savoury zing from garlic and a nice background sweetness.
The other dish was a good texture contrast. Finely shredded potato was deep fried to crisp and was then mixed with coriander leaves and stalks and finely sliced red chilli. No, it wasn’t too thrilling by way of flavour but the crunch was decent enough.
