On my recent trip into Maui, I had the pleasure of dining at Mama's Fish House. This was likely one of the finest meals I had while in Hawaii (ate also at Nick's Fishmarket, Humahuma..., etc.- reports forthcoming):
- Starter: Ahi Sashimi. Unlike any I had ever eaten- it had the most intensely red and moist flesh I had ever seen. It was served with real wasabi as well. I still have dreams about this- do not go to Mama's and tell me you did not eat it.
- Main dish: Grilled Ono with Pineapple salsa. Again, beautiful and fresh fish. The menu even cited the boat and method that produced the fish. Very moist with a good (but light) flavor.
- Main dish #2: Macadamia crusted mahi mahi. Seems to be the favorite special of restaurants in Hawaii. Really delicious, good sauce to accompany. I could not believe how moist the mahi was, though. You could press on the flesh and watch the juices run out.
- Finisher: Creme brulee. One might think this would be an odd place to have it, but it was simple and executed well.
The ambiance was excellent- set right on the beach. The service was pretty good but casual.
I really keep dreaming about the ahi sashimi. Please go and have it.
