Unlike JudiAU's Diaghilev experience (yikes?) on Valentine's Day, the S.O. booked a table at MAKO in Beverly Hills - we had a great meal and a fabulous time. They were offering a chef's tasting menu for the night or you could have the ala carte menu. It had been a while since he had been there and he REALLY wanted to order his favorites from the ala carte menu, BUT, I convinced him that we should try Mako's Valentine's day menu: afterall, the chef put a lot of thought into the menu, it was a one time deal, it looked interesting and the price point was just right - 5 courses for $65.00 per person!
Crispy Oysters with Sun Dried Tomato and Black Olive Tapenade, Fresh Basil Sauce (this is on the ala carte menu and is one of my favorites - always crispy on the outside and juicy and succulent on the inside) we paired this with sparkling wines by the glass.
THE NEXT FEW COURSES - WERE PREPARED JUST FOR THE SPECIAL MENU
Seasonal Salad with Scallops and Fresh Apple Dressing (OK the Fresh Apple Dressing was amazing and paired perfectly with the fresh scallops - bringing out the natural sweetness in the scallops) we started a flight of sakes with this course.
Duet of Marinated Blue Fin Tuna and Sautéed Foie Gras
with a Sweet Soy Glaze and Yuzu Kosho (OK THIS WAS MY SLEEPER HIT OF THE NIGHT! what a combination, complex layers of textures and flavors - chef needs to put this on the regular menu) - started a 1/2 bottle of Red with this course and for the beef to come.
Grilled Black Angus Prime Fillet Mignon of Beef
with Sherry Wine, Garlic and Black Peppercorn Reduction, Wasabi Infused Potato Puree (the Beef was incredible, tender, perfectly done, the sauce amazingly flavorful but not over powering)
Assortment of Sally's Special Desserts - we opted for the Kumquat Mousse for me and Chocolate Cake (after what is Valentines without chocolate) for him. The Kumquat Mousse - DEVINE! Cannot comment on the chocolate cake as I would NOT have gotten a ride home if I touched it - let me say that it was devoured in less than 5 minutes.
As we were leaving, we got a complimentary bag of mignardies - homemade toffee! which I just finished with my coffee.
OVERALL - really a great meal, amazing flavor profiles, good timed service, the servers were prompt and friendly we did not feel rushed as it can be at other restaurants during a high volume day.
