Maine/newport trip

bob mohalley | Sep 22, 2003 10:02 AM

Just got back from a great 10 day trip , first time, into Maine coast and Newport. Thanks to all for the tips on places to eat. Here are some of highlights--

Kennebunkport and South-Arundel Inn had great views overlooking Bush compound, but food and service were wanting.
Pier 77 in Cape Porpoise---excellent food, great views and service.New chef and owner from San Fran.
Barnicle Billies in Ogonquit--excellent lobster rolls for lunch--again great view.
MOMs in Rockland--a real nice local food spot for real lunch food.I had fried oyster salad and the best grilled cheese sandwich ever.
Atlantica in Camden--very good food--service mixed.
Lobster Pound in Lincolnville--very good lobster, reasonable price for dinner. Many locals--make revervation.
The Garage in Wiscosset--and old garage made into a nice restaurant.2nd best lobster roll and soup.View overlooking bridge real nice--great service.
Bar Harbor Inn--overpriced but excelent food.Try the lobster pastry made with strawberry and horeseradish sauce--honest.
Bealls wharf in Southwest harbor. This is the real deal for local lobster.Outside tables on the wharf, great beer, no crowds.
Bradley Inn in Pemaquit--best B&B meal.Very broad menu--wife had excellent lamb-reasonable price.
Brakfast at the Pemaquit Lighthouse. This was an unbelevable experience, and not p[lanned.Get there early at dawn, they open at 6:30, and get window seat.We actually saw whales from our table.Very good omelets.
Castle Hill Inn in newport--overrated and overpriced, plus they had an attitude.
Jordans Pond in Acadia--a must do if your in the area.Excellwent food and view.
Shaws Wharf in Round Pond--the best lobster on the trip. They do a deep fried lobster thats unbeatable.
candlers in Newport. This was the best meal of the trip.Food was unbelievable, service impeccable, free champagne tp start with--for lunch--but very expensive and worth it.Lunch was $80, but we both had a large lobster salad.
Cookes in Newport--food was ok, sat us downstairs when we wanted to go to Commodore Inn upstairs. We were on the water so stayed but service was slow.
Hope this helps.
