a great japanese grocery recently opened in narberth (a suburb very close to philly) and i urge everyone interested in japanese food to check it out. it's owned by a couple... the wife is japanese.
they have a nice selection of pantry items (noodles, rice, seaweed, soy sauces, dried bonito flakes, japanese snacks, etc) as well as a refrigerated case and freezer with lots of interesting fish cakes, frozen sushi grade fish, miso, tofu, natto and the like. there's also a lunch counter where the wife prepares items from a brief menu. i didn't try the food at the counter, but i hope to get back soon. they also have some videos/dvds for rent and a display of sanrio products. the store is large and a bit sparsely stocked, though i'm sure they'll expand their inventory as time goes by and more people discover it.
it's at 36 n. narberth ave, next to the little gym and right up the street from the main street in town (haverford ave.) before you go over the train bridge.
when you make the trip, don't forget to stop by the fabulous patisserie down the street on haverford ave, le petit mitron.
