Madrid Locals Tips

ywain | Mar 31, 201508:26 AM

Hello! I've been lurking on this board and living in Madrid for a couple of years, and I've noticed that a lot of the places that are talked about don't bear much relation to the places I tend to eat out. Not that they're bad by any means - quite the opposite - but more that obviously they're a bit more orientated for tourists looking for somewhere "must-visit".

Any other locals here want to share their favourite places: maybe places to go once you've ticked the big ones off the list, or if you're living here on a local salary ;) !

SALA DE DESPIECE (Chamberí)
Can't believe this place hasn't been mentioned yet - modern Spanish raciones with first rate ingredients, done creatively. No reservations and tends to get extremely busy (expect standing room only). They have an amazing tomato with fried basil, and I'm told the pulpo is great.

CAÑADIO (Diego de Leon)
My favourite bar de pinchos in Madrid - all very high quality, creative and extremely good value. Again no reservations and the place gets packed. There's a restaurant part as well which is significantly pricier but I've never been.

TABERNA CALATRAVA (La Latina)
This is where I always go if I have a big group of friends visiting - quite traditional Spanish but always with a slight twist, well priced. They have a great revuelto de morcilla with fried onion and roasted peppers, and the arranque roteño is also good.

EVBOCA (La Prosperidad)
OK this is a place in my barrio, so it gets extra points for that, but it does really inventive pinchos (the "tigretoston" is incredible) quite cheaply. Also has a good Menu del Dia.

I'm also trying to find the best Chinese and Venezuelan places in the city, if anyone has any tips...
