Madrid: Daytime Cafes / Nighttime restos?

Visiting Madrid next week and looking for the following:

1. Cafes where I can hang out on my own during the day (boyfriend in meetings, but I'm an intrepid wanderer and very happy to just take in the city at sidewalk cafes or wherever there's a great scene -- think Lower East Side of Madrid, or wherever the artists are and tourists aren't)

2. Markets or other food&drink-related daytime activities (see above re: me by myself)

3. Affordable restaurants for the two of us to have dinner at and suggestions for a "spoil ourselves" night. We are both serious eaters with no dietary restrictions. The more unusual, the better. We're more impressed by food than slick ambiance. And ff there's an El Bulli-equiv in Madrid, that might be our spoil night.
