Stopped by on Sat. after the nearby St Agnes branch library sale -- it was a lovely day, and I felt like a civilized snack before heading back to Astoria with my booty -- and ordered a bowl of their caldo verde, which is as delicious and comforting as ever. But the reason I'm writing about it is that the waiter mentioned they had a special wine by the glass, a '95 Quinta do Crasto (not the port, but a vino tinto), and I decided to try it, even though I haven't been crazy about Portuguese reds. It was fabulous, well worth the $7.50 -- rich and complex, more like a good French wine than any of the Portuguese ones I've had -- and yet not at all French. Kind of like Chateau Musar, the great Lebanese wine. Check it out if you're in the nabe (Amsterdam near 80th, for those of you who aren't familiar with it -- we should all remember to give locations for the places we rave about).
