Coming back to my trip report . . . in October 2016, I had five days in Chicago and need to share the final two. After a couple breakfast pastry and coffee stops at Loba and Floriole https://www.chowhound.com/post/chicag... , I jumped on the morning Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise. This was one of my vacation highlights and highly recommended. Then a brief stop at the McCormick Bridgehouse and Chicago River Museum. After 1:00pm, I figured that the lunch crowds at The Purple Pig, a short walk away, might be thinning so I headed there.

My timing wasn't bad . . . I waited about 10 minutes for the first available single, which turned out to be outside. That was fine because I had bundled up for the cruise. First up, a crunchy tangle of fried pig's ear slivers with crispy kale and pickled cherry peppers topped with a rich, runny-yolked fried duck egg. Boldly seasoned to be drinking food, these leftovers went back to the flat and we polished them off before the night was over.

Then smoked pork tongue, composed in three little portions leaning against mounds of salad olivier and accompanied with dabs of tonnato sauce and microgreens. An interesting and delectable take on surf and turf.

Then my server appeared with a plate of octopus seared to crispy on the plancha. She said it's the staff favorite and they wanted me to try it on the house. Tossed with salsa verde, the tender octopus appendages blended in with similarly shaped fingerling potatoes and nestled on a bed of singed green beans. What a wonderful gift from the kitchen to an anonymous walk-in.

This is my kind of food and obviously I enjoyed the hospitality at The Purple Pig. I'm glad I squeezed it into my itinerary.
