Lulu: Anchovy heaven and spot prawns

Joan Kureczka | May 27, 2005 01:24 AM

We stopped in to Lulu this evening and were very glad of it. One of the current things on the menu were roasted spot prawns, which our waitress/bartender (we tend to sit at the bar) said had been flown in fresh that morning. These were wonderful whole prawns with a fennel - infused butter sauce for dipping. Truly great except for one slightly mush prawn and even the flavor on that was fine.

But the real winner was an incredible pizza with house-cured anchovies, pecorino cheese, onions, lemon zest, tapenade and lots of garlic. Definitely not subtle but the true Nicoise flavors, and absolutely wonderful. This was especially great with a relatively inexpensive white rhone on the list ($6 per glass) that stood up well and complementary to the flavor on slought. Truly I was back in Nice, this was so authentic flavorwise to what I'd had there.
