No more "BBQ Runs" to Luling and Lockhart. If I should be nearby for some other reason I'll most likely stop and have some but it's just not worth it when I can get as good or better at William's here in Houston.
First stop at Luling City Market. Over $8 worth of "samples" which included 1 sausage link, 2 ribs and 2 (big) slices of brisket. The ribs were very good. As good or maybe better than I normally get at William's. Only really good thing on that trip.
Second stop at Black's. No sausage, 2 Ribs and 1 big slice of brisket. Neither worth writing home about. The sausage was especially bad as it tasted too greasy. Brisket was dry. I've never had good brisket at Black's yet I've heard raves here and think I might be jinxed. Any way. . .
Third stop at Kreuz's. Ribs, sausage and brisket and none were especially good. The brisket included way too much fat that most places would have trimmed off. (Some fat I like but not that much).
I did not stop in Luling BBQ (in Luling, just in sight of City Market) nor did I get to Smitty's or Chisholm Trail (SP?) in Lockhart. That "sampler" plate at City Market was just too much and ruled out stopping at all 6 places.
I've never heard mention of Chisholm Trail here (Chowhounds) but they sure seemed to have a lot of cars/trucks out in front. Luling BBQ had just a few cars. I've never tried either place.
I realize that no any one place (William's included) always serves brisket and ribs and whatever that we would rate a 9 or 10 every time but I've been to those places up there too many times now not to have made a fair judgement. Many times I've come out of William's complaining about the "not-so-good" brisket that I just had. But I think, day-in day-out, they rate up there with any of those places.
I still want to try Thelma's despite the reports I hear frome that place.
Oh well, Saturday afternoon and time to head to William's. I've not had any BBQ for near 2 days now.
