Lukes on Jackson boulevard in downtown Chicago has occasionally been mentioned in discussions of Italian beef. Today I found another Lukes located in northwest suburban Lake Zurich. The two places are related; when I asked the cashier about it she smiled and said that her uncle owned the one on Jackson.
The beef sandwich was good. It didnt match my top tier of Johnnies (Elmwood Park), Carms (Hillside NOT Polk Street) or Patio (Taylor Street), but its a good sandwich which will satisfy lovers of Italian beef.
I ordered it dipped with sweet and hot on the side. It also came with an extra cup of the tasty juice. The sweet peppers suffered from the slight bitterness which affects so many Italian beef places. The Giardinera was surprisingly low on heat and the oil seemed thick. Not among the best, but the basics of beef, juice and bread were good.
My son ordered an Italian sausage sandwich which was one of the biggest Id seen, sticking far out of both ends of the roll. It was good, though it didnt match Johnnies charcoal-grilled sausage.
The fries were good McDonalds-style.
Lukes has an interesting side option for $1.05 gravy dip juice with bread for those who just want a snack. Cool!

They also have burger, hot dogs, subs, gyros, pizza, etc.
Ive heard theres also a Lukes in Lake Bluff. Anyone know anything about it?
