Several weeks ago, a Hound posted on The Little Red Caboose in Deerfield on Powerline Rd. He told us how much he loved their fries, but said little about their "White Castle" clones. And, with good reason.
I tried the place today - this is the second place where I've seen a similar sign "If you love White Castle" blah blah blah. The other is on SR 7 near Sterling Road.
Well, fellow Jersey transplants, I'm here to tell you that these places are bogus - they simply don't have the right roll or the right pattie. The Caboose uses a regular hamburger roll that they got somebody to make for them in miniture - it is not a White Castle roll which is baked in a commissary just for their stores.
And so, when you subject a common hamburger roll, regardless of the size, to the same cooking process as a true White Castle goes through, these imposters get all gummy. What I ate was tasteless burger on a gooey roll that only looked like a White Castle. The fries were ok, but surely not worth a return trip in my opinion - Sorry, but I say Don't Go There! Should have gone to China Dumpling or Lucille's - Oh well, you can't win them all...
