love those spiedies in Binghamton

The Spiedie and Rib Pit in Binghamton has become a regular stop for our three families on our way to and from the Adirondacks. Spiedies are cubed pork or chicken strongly flavored with herbs and maybe a little vinegar. Sounds so simple, but these are REALLY good. This place packs a submarine bun full of the delicious meat cubes. Their French fries are crisp. Counter service is quick and pleasant.

They also sell spiedie meat by the pound for you to grill at home. Their menu lists ribs, wings, subs, Philly cheesesteak, and variations on the spiedies, but we've never ventured beyond the basic spiedie--it's filling, tender, and flavorful. We'll eat there on the way up, 3 days later on the way home, and sometimes buy a pair to eat when we get home. Right now I'm looking forward to the next time.

Their card gives 3 addresses: 1268 Front St in Binghamton, 942 Conklin Rd in Conklin, and 3908 Vestal Pkwy in Vestal. E-mail www.SpiedieandRibPit.com. The one at MetroCenter is open mostly during the school year.

We also tried and liked Pat Mitchell's Homemade Ice Cream in Binghamton.

Any place else we should know about?
