I had not been to legendary Louie & Ernie's Pizza on Crosby Ave. in the Bronx for a few years. It came up as a craving, so I made the solo trip down from my Westchester haunts. It has not changed much over the years. The brick old-neighborhood facade. You could see the pizza man preparing the pies. Inside, there were a few spaced tables. Pizza take-out boxes were piled high towards the rear. There was a constant buzz of patrons coming in and out. On the wall was a plaque acknowledging 60 years in business. The shop originally opened in 1959.

Scored a small table and ordered a slice with their signature lump fennel sausage, and a broccoli rabe calzone. Took half the calzone home. It was the old time religion, great flavor! Wanted to order so much more, but decided I would return with friends to share sometime soon.

By the way, an uncle and cousin of the owning family recently opened Cosimo &Johnny's Pizzeria in Eastchester on Rt. 22. The pizza I've had there is very similar in preparation and taste.
