Long weekend w/ Pop; some reviews

Father, with friend, in town from Northen Ohio, for a shorter than usual stay:

1. Required pilgrimage to Burrito King: despairing of the Hyperion branch, I was sent to bring back from the Alvarado/Sunset branch. Machaca and chicken soft tostada to expectations. Still a wonderful deal.

2. Dinner at the White House in Laguna Beach. (NOT W.H. in Anaheim). Pretty good; parking mind-bogglingly awful (spouse ended up dropping us in front and then parking about half a mile, up three flights of steps, away...)food pretty tasty, portions just so large as to be silly... Chipotle chicken done competently. Price pretty reasonable; wine price (Jekel Riesling) not appalling.

3. Sunday PM. Well, it WAS the 4th. El Cholo on Western NOT ANSWERING (no machine), so Pop's dreams of green corn tamales slipping away; called the S.M. branch, which was opened, and asured me that the LA branch was, too. We went, looked, NO DICE. So, on to larchmont/Melrose, in search of eats where, it appears, little is open, other than:

ANTONIO's , which has either slipped badly in the last fifteen years (since I last ate there) or my taste has changed in radical ways; this wasn't as good as Allegria usually is (but they're NEVER open when I want them, so I didn't even look this time). Service was forgetful and sloppy too, unfortunate considering restaurant wasn't anywhere close to full (though that should have also been a clue to me...)

We had strudel (apple and poppy-seed) at Canters' for dessert. THAT was served promptly and was as expected.

Then, to add insult to injury, (after Pop was safely ensconced on the plane) the spouse made me eat at Chevy's yesterday.

Ah, well, I'm off to No. Ca./So. oregon!
