Friday I called Lilys House in Lafayette and ordered dinner for eight Saturday. Lily was very helpful.
I picked my favorites from the December Chowhound dinner. In addition Lily recommended long jing shrimp (I think Anli posted re them) and pork meatballs (aka lions head meatballs from Anlis translation of the Chinese menu). The shrimp (sweet, fresh, not overcooked) and meatballs (rich, perfect spices) were huge hits. The only minor disappointment of the meal was the winter carp tail braised in brown sauce. It was not as good as last timea little too fishy tasting.
Lily and Willy Ying (her husband/chef) were very pleased (and a little surprised) that we enjoyed the meal. I asked why their specialties are not on the English menu. They confided their Chinese friends had advised them non-Asians do not like Shanghainese food.
Unfortunately most tables were empty. Other restaurants we passed on Mt. Diablo were full and even had waiting lines. What can we do to get some PR for Lilys? Since I live in the neighborhood I have a vested interest in seeing them stay open. Josh Sensare you out there? Who else writes about food in Contra Costa or East Bay?
