I wanted to get this posted while they're still there!
TUESDAYS, 11am-2pm, right outside City Hall on Civic Center Plaza.
Liba is a falafel truck that's been around Emeryville and San Francisco since last September. In addition to falafel-stuffed pitas and sweet potato fries, Liba boasts a toppings bar of over a dozen delicious homemade falafel toppings, plus raita and hummus.
I happened to walk by right before they opened today, and watched the ladies set up before buying a $5 small falafel sandwich ($9 for the large). It turned out to be the perfect lunch for me. The falafels are small, crispy, fluffy, and flavorful. But what really shines are the homemade toppings.
I was feeling greedy and piled a little of each topping into my pita. I was really impressed! I haven't seen this kind of selection since I was at Amsterdam Falafel in Washington DC. Each topping is bright and flavorful. They really stand out against each other when piled into the pita, and each bite took on a slightly different flavor. If I were a regular I might pick two or three toppings each time to enjoy them more, but I was pleasantly surprised that my pita sandwich did not end up tasting like a mish mash.
My favorites were the cardamom pickles, tomato chutney, and fresh soft goat cheese, but it's a tough call. Maybe I'll decide next week.
