Lers Ros - The Great Thai Food I'm Missing in Toronto

I am on an eternal search for great Thai food and in Toronto, where I'm from, it is sadly non-existent. I usually have to wait for my business trips to Los Angeles to get decent Thai food on this continent.

So when I read on this board about Lers Ros and the comparisons of the offerings here to the Thai food one can find at some of Los Angeles' best Thai restaurants, I got excited. I gathered my partner up and convinced him to make the 1 hour drive to SF from SJ to have Thai food, promising him that if Lers Ros indeed lives up to the hype he would never again bother to eat Thai in Toronto.

All in all, mission accomplished -- my partner will no longer accept the subpar standards for Thai food in Toronto, or in many other places on this continent for that matter.

In my excitement to order dishes that I hadn't eaten for a long time, we ordered far more than was reasonable for two people to consume. We ordered the herb sausage, papaya salad, chicken coconut soup, duck red curry, fried fish with a light spicy sauce, and rice. And honestly, if my partner hadn't said that we can come back again before we return to Toronto I probably would have ordered more out of sheer inability to narrow down my choices. Needless to say, half of our dinner is now lodged in the fridge in our corproate apartment.

Everything was just so good -- no skimping on the fish sauce, the birds eye chilis, herbs or other ingredients. The only reason I'm not giving it a solid 5 stars is because I think the balance of these flavours is ever so slightly off. In the case of the papaya salad, there was a bit too much fish sauce, which made the dish saltier than I would have preferred. In the chicken coconut soup, I thought there was a touch too much lime juice and not enough lime leaf. In the fish, the sauce had a bit too much soy sauce, and again, that made it a bit saltier than what I thought would have been ideal. In the curry, I would have preferred a bit more coriander root to the galangal. And so on.

Otherwise, the experience was what I was hoping to find and I'd be more than happy to be a return patron before I head back to Toronto. In fact, I already know what I want to order on my next trip!
