Lemon Bar Journeys Pt. 1

Dommy! | Mar 12, 2005 12:38 AM

My journey began innocently enough... A couple of months ago, I went to Ralphs after a HARD workout at the Gym (Bad idea!!) and saw they had a pretty yummy looking lemon bar in their bakery case. I bought one and quickly took a bite in my car... and BLEH!!! Way too sugary (The custard was even gritty!) and no REAL lemon flavor... I was horribly dispointed... Then I saw this great post on Chowhound...

[BROKEN LINK REMOVED]

Inspired, I began my own Lemon Bar Journey... and here is where my travels have taken me so far...

Boule... Technically a Meyer Lemon Tart. Beautiful to look at, but horribly dispointing, the lemon curd was way too mild, not custardy at all... the worst was the crust... a shortbread that totally overpowered the flavor of the whole Tart... I wanted my $5 back...

Joans on 3rd... I had seen a praise for it in another lemon bar post and this was even worse that the boule tart... The main issue was the THICK layer of powder sugar on top!! Not only is it horribly messy, but the sugar made a paste in my mouth and never let me even have a chance to taste the Lemon curd. Pretty, but truly badly designed..

Lemon Moon... We have a winner here!! a Thin Lemon Bar, with firm crust and wonderful sharp and flavorful lemon curd. It also is rather unique as it has a crumb topping! So it allows for the rich tang of lemon to be studded with occassional sweetness... It would be better if the bars were a little thicker... but overall a great bar...

And because you never know what is in your own backyard (Namely Long Beach)...

Babettes Feast... Again, served in Tart form, the custard is rich and great mouth feel. But no real lemon taste and a REALLY bad floppy/bready crust.... :/

Sweet Jills... I love this bakery... it actually SMELLS like a bakery and they bake goodies all day and night long... Theirs is a MONSTER of a bar, with lemon curd sandwiched in between a thick crust on bottom and a THIN crust on top... The thick custard imparts an AWESOME Lemon taste... But the bottom crust is CHEWY!! Not all the texture I to go with such a lucious custard... I ended up eating just the curd and top crust Which was A BIT intense. They also offer Lime Bars...

Bristol Farms... The Long Beach Winner (So far)... The girl had no idea where they got it from, but it was pretty darn close to perfect, great lemony curd, a DUSTING of powered sugar on top, the only 'downfall' was it had a slightly moist crumbly crust. I perfer a firm pastry crust, so I can my lemon bar like a pizza.... more traffic friendly that way... LOL!!

Anyway, I know I have lots more lemon bars to try (I've seriously tried to go to Europane 4 times since I began my quest and I never make it in time before they close!! Grr...) and if you guys have any other recs... please let me know...
