Last month I was back in the Capitol for meetings, and stayed in Elk Grove. For a night cap, I made a first visit to the local branch of Leatherby's Family Creamery to try the famous Alan's Black & Tan Sundae, $10.69. Apparently this is the most popular item on the ice cream menu, described as "Creamy Vanilla and Toasted Almond ice cream drowned in Leatherby’s famous Caramel and Chocolate Fudge, topped with whipped cream, nuts and a cherry."
While one can switch to other ice cream flavors, I stuck with the classic combination. The chopped almonds are by request and served on the side. The sundae is well-done, especially liked the heavy, housemade whipped cream. Neither flavor of ice cream was distinct enough that i'd indulge in a plain cone, but they are suited to ice cream creations like this.
The old-fashioned ice cream parlor decor and the friendly staff were a delight. Leatherby's has other branches in Sacramento and Citrus Heights.
