Learning asian home cooking -- ingredients?

I just bought a copy of Corinne Trang's "Essentials of Asian Cuisine: Fundamentals and Favorite Recipes" and am excited to try my hand at some of this fabulous cuisine. However, I find that I'm having a trouble finding ingredients. As I'm knew to this cuisine (as far as home cooking) I can't tell which markets are going to sell typical chinese ingredients, which Japanese, which Thai, Korean, etc. Also, some of the ingredients she lists (e.g. cloud ear mushrooms) I'm not even sure I know what they look like! Finally, several markets I've visited have very little labelled in English. Any advice out there for an English-speaking beginner?
