Went to Le Refuge on E. 82nd Street last night. Earlier this month there was a report from ABP about a dissatisfying experience there. I was sorry to hear about that. Over the years I've been there a number of times, and I've found them to be consistent and dependable, good French food with mature, respectful service. The rooms are a little tired, but it's always an enjoyable evening, and last night was no different. (My wife and I met there on a blind date five years ago last night.)
We sat in the "garden," which is the backyard surrounded by high-rise apartment buildings. But easy enough to forget with the right company! I started with the chevre gratin provencale, which was layered vegetables (zucchini, summer squash, basil). Very satisfying, and my wife had the veloute of watercress, a refreshing summer appetizer. My main course was the wild striped bass with a carrot/ginger broth, excellent, hers the roasted duck with broccoli mousse. For dessert a Gateau Opera for me, and some mousse-in-a-chocolate-cup type of thing for her.
Anyway, I think it's a very pleasant place to return to occasionally, and have never been disappointed.
