Look, I was in a rush, I needed to go to Tower Records, and a Chowhound shouldn't give in to faux-French twaddle ("tartin" instead of "sandwich"), but I had to grab something quick. I ordered an egg salad sandwich, not thinking to look at the description therein. Hey, how can you muck up egg salad?
Ten minutes and $7.75 later, I found out.
The dark bread of the sandwich was, typically for LPQ, annoyingly dense and chewy, yet devoid of much flavor. The crusts were notably tough. But then the anchovies hit my tongue. I don't mind anchovies as an ingredient, if the hand is light. But these particular little fishies were so salty, my taste buds felt like they were being assaulted (pardon the pun) with truncheons. I had to peel the little buggers off before I went into Sodium Chloride Overdose.
Too bad-- the anchovies were the only flavor on the sandwich. Even the capers were bland. I don't need an egg salad recipe so delicious I'd plotz (name that movie!!); I just want some flavor.
Did I mention the side greens without even a whisper of the word "vinaigrette" in the same room? The insipid tomatoes? The dull cornichons?
Time for this pretentious place to quietly go away. Santa Monica deserves better.
