Lay-offs and Lattee chocolate cake at Neldam’s

Melanie Wong | Sep 15, 200211:10 PM

A couple weeks ago I bought a Lattee cake ($23, photo below) from Neldam’s Bakery in Oakland to take to a dinner party in Healdsburg. It was a huge hit with the guests! Dense and very moist chocolate sponge cake, milk chocolate custard-y filling and a generous slathering of chocolate whipped cream all round. A bargain too, as it was enough for 12 generous servings, and a few people commented that it would have been three times the price at Healdsburg’s renowned Downtown Bakery.

The next day I brought the remains with me to lunch with Joel & Bonni Weinstein (jaweino) at Rob’s Roadhouse Grill in Windsor. Feeling tacky for carrying in my dessert, I offered to share it with the kitchen crew. Rob said they all loved it and pronounced it the “perfect expression of milk chocolate” and he didn’t hesitate when offered the last bite left on our plate.

If you haven’t tried Neldam’s yet, or haven’t been for a while, please stop by soon. There was a letter to customers posted at the cash register dated August 30 asking them to be patient during busy times and explaining that they’d cut back staff hours to make it through the downturn. Neldam’s has been around longer than I have, and I can’t imagine life without it. Please do your part to keep this institution in business.
