Restaurants & Bars 5

Lawrence around Warden

I knew this was one of the most interesting areas of the city, but a revisit this afternoon has only reenforced that feeling. I have long enjoyed places like Arz and the Patna Kebab House (easily the best kebabs in the city!). There are numerous other Middle Eastern, SOuth Asian, and other food stores and small restaurants filling the nondescript strip malls in the area. But I wanted to highlight a few other places we visited today:

Diana Seafood: Their website begins to do them justice. They have nice fresh (low price) and frozen fish and seafood, including some rare ones (like barramundi). But the highlight was oysters! They have one the best selections I've seen, including rare Belons and lovely West Coast oysters. Prices were low and they happily opened a few, squeezed lemon, and gave us tastes. Does oyster shopping get better than that?

Kera: This is a Keralan take-out place, serving truly authentic and exciting Keralan food. Kerala is a state at the southwestern tip of India with a long tradition of spices and seafood. As you walk into the place you are hit with the aroma of homecooking...No eat in, by the way.

Royal Kerala Foods: In a new location down the street. This is the only Keralan foodstore in the country, they boast (and I believe them). They carry a nice selection of frozen Keralan dishes (like fish curry and tapioca, a personal favourite) and frozen Keralan fish.

This is what's great about this city! Hidden gems stashed behind gas stations as well as authentic and regional cooking from around the world squeezed together in random strip malls. Worth a visit...
