Hi Southwest Hounds,
Just got back from Comdex yesterday. I finally found a chance to go to the old CH favorite Lotus of Siam. Fortunately it was only a $5 taxi ride from LVCC and a comfortable walk back.
Bad thing was I didn't go there prepared with a list of "must-tries" from older posts, so I went in armed only with my wits and luck. For our appetizer, we had the sour sausage and crispy rice appetizer (heat: 7). Very interesting! Never had anything like it at other Thai restaurants. Although we decided it was a bit salty, we scarfed down the entire plate. I guess that was a good choice based on back posts.
Next we had the red curry with chicken (heat: 7). A bit of a pedestrian choice, but hey, one of us is a huge curry fan. The last dish was the Drunken noodles (heat: 7). Wonderful dish of flat rice noodles topped with baby squid heads, shrimp, more squid, shellfish, and imitation crabmeat. Not sure why it's called "drunken". The noodles were all clumped and sticking on the bottom, but delightful nevertheless.
One of my dinners was at Emeril's Fish House. I know a lot of people hate him, but I still enjoy his show, he has put a lot of inspiration into my cooking. I wanted the yellowfin tuna, but they were out. So I had the crispy skin tilefish with fennel, haricort verts and lobster infused hollandaise sauce. The fish itself was a bit bland. I guess that's just how the fish is. My companion had the fish stew of monkfish, clams, mussels, and shrimp; topped with a slice of sourdough. This was pretty tasty.
One of my stops was Red Square. Although I didn't try any of the Russian insired bar foods, I had a vodka tasting. I selected the "motherland" tasting of all Russian Vodkas. I was given a large plate with a big block of red ice (red square, apparently), with 4 shot glasses nestled in it and a lemon wedge as a palate cleanser. The brands of Vodka was Stoli Gold, Kristal, [some Russian named vodka], and Red Army
