After years of reading about the pastrami sandwich at Langer's I've finally gone and tried it, and I've gotta say, all the talk, all the electronic disk space used on this subject, is soooo worth it ! I only wish I hadn't waited so long (life is short, who knows what could happen ? So why am I suddenly talking like my dad ?)
This has to be the best pastrami sandwich, anywhere ! I simply cannot fathom a better sandwich. I've had a "tower" pastrami sandwich at one of those delis on Broadway in Manhattan, and while in terms of sheer volume it was impressive, I don't think the actual flavor or the perfect combination of bread, meat and condiments that is a Langer's sandwich, comes close.
I had the #19, which is pastrami on rye with swiss, a schmear of cole slaw and russian dressing. I ordered the pastrami hand cut, as others suggested. It was sandwich nirvana, for me. I was a little hesitant about the combination - the cole slaw sounds kind of weird, but in actuality it works, perfectly balancing the rich unctuousness of the amazing pastrami. I put a little of the brown mustard on, and was blown away at how good the whole thing was. Had it with Dr. Brown's Cel-Ray (they still do in fact carry it, and boy is it a good match with this food !)
I dream of my next trip here, and only wish I lived closer to this place (though my doctor is probably glad I don't)
