I noticed today that One if By Land was listed as the most over-rated restaurant in Manhattan on Eater.com -- actually, it was off of some other survey they linked to, but you get the idea....
I was really interested because as it turned out, I was having dinner their tonight -- someone I was meeting made reservations there.
So, anyway, here's my take: if you're expecting a really romantic (and I'm a guy, so you now I mean it :) ) place with what I think was very good service, One if by Land is a great place.... the ambience is just wonderful.
Food-wise, though, it was.... dull. Not bad in any way -- everything was "workmanlike"... service a tad bit slow, but I don't think you'd notice if you went there on a special occasion or a date.
But while it was decent, there was just no pizzazz to the food -- kind of like they "tried".... but nothing really sparked. I asked the person I was dining with about it and she said pretty much the same thing... would we go back? Probably not.... unless we wanted to go there for the room itself.
