adding a brief report on our stay on Lago di Garda this summer. As in the past we stayed at the Angeli in Gardone Sopra, and had several opportunities to experience their cuisine - while some of the dishes prepared by the brother/former chef are no longer offered, we thought that the cooking which had been good under his tenure was even more excellent under their current chef. Greatly enjoyed meat, fish, risotto, cheese and pasta dishes, including tender steak, a very nice vitello tonnato, and decadently creamy cheese-filled pasta dishes. Service is extremely cordial and local wines we drank were excellent, in particular the Malborgetto, a Benaco Bresciano rosso of the Le Chiusure winery. . The Angeli offers a very good regional cheese selection (not sampled on this visit). I highly recommend ..
None of the other restaurants we tried in Gardone Sopra are in any way a destination, but of them we found da Mario on the square right across from the Vittoriale, to be quite satisfactory with an expanded menu, including some quite good pasta, seafood and local fish, along with pizza and grilled meats. Mario is neapolitan and it shows in his interest in pasta and seafood, tho there is a weakness in vegetable dishes, as in most of this region.. Da Marietta, farther up the hill is quite disappointing (except for the views) and the other restaurants on the square are very average, as expected in their location.
