My parents are in town and I need to decide where to take them for dinner tonight. They're enthusiastic, sophisticated eaters, but they're getting on in years, so I want to take them somewhere that serves interesting food but isn't loud or thick with attitude. We want to be downtown, and we don't want Italian (because we're going to Esca tomorrow night), but beyond that we're open to anything.
I have a reservation at Gotham Bar and Grill, but that seems like not the best choice -- sounds overrated in general, and for top dollar I suspect we'll be getting the stand-in staff on Labor Day.
A very different alternative is Inside, on Jones St. in the West Village. I've searched previous postings and have found a few comments that didn't exhibit strong feelings either positive or negative. Any thoughts on the place, or any other suggestions, would be much appreciated.
