We had a birthday dinner gathering last night at La Suite and felt the food was good to average and the service lacking.
For the party of nine, we shared appetizers of:
Ahi Tuna Tartare
Dungeness Crab Salad
Country Style Pate
Kobe Beef Tartare
The standouts were the Pate, Sweetbreads, and Kobe Beef Tartare. With nine people, our order only afforded a small taste of each, but it was enough to get a sense of the flavors. The Ahi Tuna Tartare was void of any distinctions, and the Asparagus was plain and the preparation an afterthought.
I chose the Monkfish for my entree and thought it was one of the best offerings. It was cooked just right, the look and texture perfect, and had the tastiest little potato morsels as an accompanyment. The broth or jus on the plate was also delicious.
Also good was the side dish of Pommes Frites. They were flecked with tiny rosemary pieces and were salted well. Very tasty.
Desserts included a Chocolate Souffle that came out extremely hot and filled with a creme anglaise. This disappeared quickly. But the Tarte Tatin was subpar. The crust tasted pre-packaged and stale.
The service was a bit amateurish and completely fell apart after our entrees arrived. We had to wave her down to get the dessert menus and ultimately the bill. Forget about being offered a coffee refill. To their defense however, they did seem understaffed.
If I ever go back to La Suite, it will not be of my choosing. But it seems that if you order enough dishes, and have no penchant for attentive service, you might have a decent meal.
