La Porta's, Old Town(ish), Alexandria

Funny - I thought I'd posted about my wonderful dinner at La Porta's but perhaps I didn't as I can't find it. I just made reservations for another dinner and that triggered my memory. No one ever writes about this place and indeed, I'd never even heard of it. A friend who works nearby told me about it as she's a big fan. So I had dinner there in late June and enjoyed the food, service, and atmosphere. It is quietly elegant though not stuffy. The tables are far apart so you can hear your dining companions. The service is superb - professional, unobtrusive, and you never have to hunt around for a waiter. They are always observing their tables - as skilled staff should. The food was fresh, tasty, and well-prepared. I had the summer salmon salad which was a beautiful piece of fish, perfectly cooked (moist) over terrific greens, surrounded by an ample number of top-quality and flavorful berries. The pear emulsion was subtle and really brought the dish together. I can't recall what my friend had but she loved it. I do recall that she shared a bit of her pasta with me and it was silky, perfectly cooked, and truly enjoyable. We both ordered the peach cobbler for desert. Every item on the desert list - all made in-house - sounded terrific. I was hesitant to order peach cobbler because it is one of my favorites and I didn't want to be disappointed. Not a problem. Easily the best peach cobbler I've ever had. Almost ordered a second one. They have a bar that is separated from the dining room and that has a jazz pianist, another nice feature.

I know some of the foodie snobs turn up their noses at this place. Their loss.
