On Sat 11/22/08 four of us ate at 5pm. We were the only table for 1hr. They had music on so it wasn't too lonely.
We got many things to share:
Pisco sour $7 - Famous Peruvian alcoholic drink. hubby liked it.
Chicha morada $2.50 - sweet drink made from purple corn. I liked it.
FREE toasted warm bread w/ cold butter. We liked the warm bread. Ask for refills if you want more.
papa rellena $7 - Delicate fritter of mashed potato stuffed with seasoned ground beef served with our lime-onion house salsa. One smallish fritter we split in 4, I thought it was ok.
Yuca fritas $7 - An order of fried yucca with a side of Huancaina sauce. I didn't try the fried yucca though it looked nice and not too fried. Nice sauce like nacho sauce.
Anticucho $10- Peruvian style kabobs, bite size morsels delicately marinated in wine, vinegar and spices skewered and grilled to perfection. Prepared with tender slices of beef heart, served with grilled potatoes. 2 skewers of beef hearts w/ good amount of meat, very tender and juicy. Spicy chili sauce on the side - yummy. Recommended.
Lomo saltado $15- Choice sirloin stripes or chicken sautéed with onions, tomatoes, fresh cilantro, and cumin served with golden fried potato.
Parihuela fisherman soup $17- like a ciappino w/ fish, shrimps, clam, & squid, nice.
Ceviche $15-Seasoned fish, marinated in limejuice with a touch of chili, served with corn, yucca and sweet potato. Good amount & delicious. Some crunchy corn, a white sweet potato, some yucca. Recommended.
Desserts on the menu sounded good & seemed resonable:
Helado de lucuma $3 - Peruvian fruit made into ice cream
Arroz con leche $4 - classic rice pudding w/ Peruvian twist
Mazamorra Morada $4 - Peruvian delicacy rarely found in restaurant. Bits of apple & pineapple in a pudding made from purple corn, sweetened w/ sweet potato flour & spiced w/ cinnamon & clove. To try next time.
Alfajores $4 - Traditional Peruvian cookie w/ flakey crust & caramel filing. Only 1 cookie though. To try next time.
Creme Volteada -Peruvian style flan.
Our total before tip $97.20. Not cheap, but good food.
One unisex bathroom in the back of the restaurant.
Street parking is easy, close to Jack London Square. Next to Soizic.
