we were walk-ins and MATSURI was a 1 1/2hr wait on a thursday night so we just went upstairs to LA BOTTEGA.
i don't know how many restaurants are so profoundly affected by the cold weather but LA BOTTEGA was one of them. the thin walled old round building on the deck of the maritme hotel certainly was not constructed for this cold snap. there was a horrible draft running throughout the place even though it was packed. i actually held my hands over my pasta for a sec to warm them up-yikes!
we shared sarde griglia or grilled sardines to start ($14). this was the highlight. fresh and perfectly grilled. she got the prosciutto pizza ($13) and i got the vongole pasta with garlic and cockles($14). the pizza was just ok. nice sauce, weak-not really not very good crust. my pasta was fine if a bit bland and uninspired. service was crushed but fine considering.
i'll prob go back since i live close by but so far i would not rec going out of my way for this place foodwise. my initial impression is that i'd bet there is better or at least comprable italian near any one of you --- i have to try more on the menu to be certain of course.
on the other hand, in the summer the bar and deck of the maritime are worth a visit or three.
