I say guilty pleasure because kung pao chicken tastes like one of those non-authentic Americanized Chinese dishes, chili peppers and all. Be that as it may, I still love a good kung pao chicken, and had a very satisfying lunch of it at Shanghai, at the the corner of Bayard and Mulberry today. There's something about the texture of peanuts mixed with flavorful celery and chicken, with the spice, that I love.
My other favorite kung pao dish is the kung pao squid at Grand Sichuan (I've only been to the 24th Street location).
Another somewhat embarassing non-authentic Chinese restaurant where I like the kung pao chicken is a sentimental old favorite, Suzy's on Bleecker Street between Thompson and Sullivan.
I was wondering if anyone else had recommendations for this dish anywhere in the five boroughs. Thanks.
