Astana Restaurant at Bukit Jalil is a haven for Central Asians students there looking for some comfort food from home. The restaurant offers a wide variety of Kazakh and Russian dishes, including 'kazy'(horse-meat sausages). What we had this evening:
A baked Kazakh pastry filled with minced beef-mutton-onions and spices. The crisp, flaky pastry enclosing the fennel-scented meat-onion filling were delicious.
A Russian-style potato salad. Very well-done here - loved the corn kernels mixed into the salad.
Hand-pulled noodles, cooked with beef, celery, tomatoes and spices. Very well-done - the noodle was chewy as it should be, and the broth was hearty and delicious.
A round naan-like Kazakh bread.
Boiled dumplings of minced beef in unleavened dough wrapper, served with 'Smetana' (sour cream). Very well-made here.
Central Asian rice cooked in mutton broth and fat, with mutton and grated carrots. Delish, also comes topped with 'kazy' (horse-meat sausages).
Steamed dumplings filled with minced beef-mutton-fat and onions.
Very good service and nice ambience. Astana also has a good selection of Eastern European-style cakes: Medovik, Spartak, Anechka, and Oreshki.
