Kream 'N' Kone Reopens

Yesterday the Dennisport Kream'n'Kone reopened after the fire that destroyed the place several months ago. The new shop is actually down the road a couple of miles in what is technically West Dennis at the corner of Routes 28 and 134. I drove by on opening day {Wednesday) but the lines were horrendous so I waited until lunch today to give it a shot. The new place is bigger than the old one, but, so far, so are the crowds.

I have been going to Kream'n'Kone for over 40 years, so I was curious to see how they would do at the new location and my first reaction is that they have a bit of a shake down to go through before they can match their standard of the past.

The place has a hastily rennovated feel about it, with a sloppy paint job and no menu boards up on the wall yet. The lines are longer than they need to be, due largely to the untrained summer help which seems to come mainly from Eastern Europe. They are eager, but don't understand the system or the money yet. I expect they will get better quickly, but the July 4th weekend will be an ordeal by fire for them. The food is also brought to your table for you instead of picking it up at the counter. This adds an element of complication, since the help must cruise the dining room looking for your number to give you your food.

As for the food, we had the whole belly fried clams and the fried scallops. The seafood was good, but the fries and onion rings were not up to what I remember. It may that the cooks are still getting used to the new kitchen. I'll give it another shot in a couple of weeks to see if things improve. I hope and expect they will.
