A & J King Artisan Breads, Salem

Not usually convenient for me but I happened to be spending a good part of the day in Salem on Tuesday and stopped by this little shop and what a pleasant surprise. I picked up a french baguette and had a cappuccino. The cappuccino was very good but the french bread was outstanding, the crust and crumb were excellent, the crust was just that, very crusty and the crumb had loads of the requisite air holes. What I didn't finish that night, I put in the freezer with my half eaten loaf from Clear Flour purchased at Whole Foods. The next night I defrosted both and had a couple of slices with extra virgin olive oil brought back from Tuscany and it wasn't even close...the loaf from A & J was far far superior in both crust and crumb! If you are ever up that way give it a try! I will now have to try B & R Breads in Framingham but Clear Flour's loaf was very disappointing next to A & J.
