Kid-friendly (but still world class) chow in New Zealand?

We're going to New Zealand on our very first overseas family vacation since we had our 2-year old, so this is pretty special. From the looks of this board we should perhaps have chosen London or Paris, but the tickets have been bought, and Europe will just have to wait until next time.

So -- we have 2 days in Auckland and 3 in Wellington, but we'll be trawling around the North Island for the rest of it, and are more than willing to make a detour for a good meal. Any and all suggestions welcome -- we love fresh seafood and good meat, but are more than happy to try new stuff as well. Our chowpuppy's attention span probably bans us from the frou-est of the frou, but he *will* sit still for a good meal, so we'd love to hear of great restaurants that will welcome a (generally well-behaved) toddler. Cafes, farmer's markets, ice-cream shacks and anything else that comes to mind would be more than welcome too! Thanks to all in advance!
