Khana Peena Buffet in Berkeley (on Oxford)

Philosopher | Jul 18, 200307:29 PM

Since this has been my week of trying the new indian options in the Berkeley area, I thought I'd give my take on the new buffet at Khana Peena. For 6.50 (including tax and a beverage) it's a pretty good deal. The food is a step above what one gets at some other indian buffets. The flavors are fairly complex and there's a reasonable selesction. When I went there were about 5 veggie dishes to choose from, chicken tandoori, two meat curries--lamb and chicken, rice and naan. The veggie dishes were generally good, or maybe just a little bit better than adequate, but by no means superb. I did particularly like a bean dish that they had though. I thought the lamb curry was decent. The quality of the chicken, however was disappointing. I found it mostly inedible. Having had an excellent chicken dish at this location before the buffet was instituted, I had expected quite a bit more--I suppose Khana Peena uses different quality chickens in its buffet than in its a la carte dishes.

A couple of interesting additional points:

-I was there from about 2:15 - 3:30 and the buffet was still available when i left. Also, they brought out some new food around 3.

-While I was eating, one of the employees from the new Quizno's around the corner (on Center) sat down at one of the tables outside for lunch. I guess he also realized that his employer did not offer the best lunch option in the area.
