went to Keon's in haverhill last week. this will be the first time i have eaten there since the change of ownership in november.
we had made a 7pm reservation but were not seated until 740pm which was not a big deal cuz we snagged seats at the bar and had a few pints.
we started with the lobster bisque which was good and had nice flavor but might of benefited from a little extra cream. we also had the mussels that were excellent even though the sauce was the lobster bisque and once i detected that i was put off the mussels for some reason. maybe the richness of the mussels and the cognac was too much.
i had the scallops but i was told that the listed carrot puree was out and that they were going to sub mashed potatoes so i asked about the risotto, and got it. the scallops (maybe 10 good sized) were cooked very nicely but i did hit a piece of grit or shell on one of them. the risotto was pretty good but the portion was small. i think this was due to running out of some stuff and trying to stretch the risotto to cover the bases.
a friend had the veal special which looked, and was reported, as very good although i did not try it. and another companion had the swordfish which was of a nice size, cooked properly, but it did come with a small(ish) portion of the risotto and grilled asparagus (also nice).
we passed on dessert, i am done with creme brulee.
service was nice to begin with but fell off as the place got busier. we waited a bit for the wine we ordered with our mains to be delivered and there was another wait for the bill.
in all, i think the kitchen is more than competent but i think the new owner needs to do slighlty better managing the room as several parties (with reservations) were left standing looking at empty tables for over 30 minutes.
will be back.
