Last week we checked out Keoki's in Marina (across the street from Grocery Outlet). I'd heard about it from Mom's CPA who lives in Hawaii and I remembered seeing the stand at farmers markets where they got their start. It shares space with baker, Catering Magik. Mostly set up for take-out, there's a table that seats four, plus a few stools at the counter, if you want to eat in.
Super friendly family members working here exude Aloha warmth and spirit. Musubi are wrapped to order, so our teri chicken one was warm and so good.
I had the loco moco, which was a huge honking hamburger steak nicely seasoned with savory onion and very beefy. On a bed of perfectly cooked short grain rice, then topped with a couple eggs ordered over-easy and a luxurious bath gravy, I expected to take half of it home with me. But dang if I didn't eat nearly all of it. The glossy brown gravy has the slight metallic twinge of commercial beef stock, yet has a lot of depth of flavor from the cook's hand. Our friend had the teri chicken plate and had to take half of hers home for later too. I got mac salad to go, and it was the slightly sweet, heavy with mayonnaise style so typical of the islands.
There's a different special each day of the week. We were there on kalbi day, and it took all my will power to not order that plate. I figured I should spend a little less first to decide whether we liked the food here or not. We do, and we'll be back another time to dig deeper into the menu, such as lau lau offered on Fridays, or the shave ice.
The pies, cookies and other pastries made by Catering Magik are also available for sale. When the weather gets better, this is the place to grab lunch to take to the beach.
