Just back from a lovely trip to London. Tried to get to the Lahore Kebab House on Umberston St. in Aldgate on a rainy Saturday night. Got utterly turned around after getting out of the train station and then finally managed to find it. The Zagat's review called it "jolly & noisy" and cautioned one to "not mind the decor", so we were preapred. Except, when we went in, it was practically empty. About ten tables with yellow plastic tablecloths under bright flourescent lights. One table was full of rather sombre looking Pakistani (I believe) gentlemen.
We were a bit unsettled by the atmosphere, but proceed to order some quite yummy food. Light, warm nan. A tikka masala with fresh peas and nicely marinated chicken and a lamb curry that made my eyes water in the best possible way.
We happily showed the Zagat's review to the owner - only to find out (you guessed it) we were in the wrong Lahore Kebab House. The "real" Lahore Kebab one was three blocks away... A nice unexpected find, however.
