Kauai Trip report

My husband and I were in Kauai March 3-10 (perfect weather). We stayed on the North Shore. We had a place with a full kitchen so did not go out for all our meals. Foodland market in Princeville - OUCH! It is expensive. We ate at Postcards in Hanalei our first night and had a very good meal. They call themselves the best restaurant on the North Shore and it may be, but that is not saying too much as Kauai is definite not the foodie island. The delicious taro fritters and the limeade were the best things on the menu. The fish was pretty good - swordfish with some interesting pureed sides. I ordered the rice pilaf, but when it arrived it was Spanish rice which did not go with the sauce on the fish at all, so I asked for potatoes which were just ok, nothing special. Dessert was a really good carrot cake that had coconut in it. We also ate at the Hanalei Dolphin which has good fresh fish and is less pricey than Postcards, but pretty touristy. We also ate at Kintaro on the East Shore (south of Kapa'a) which is a really good Japanese restaurant with pretty good prices, very popular. Another favorite dining experience was the Shrimp Station in Waimea on the West Side (we stopped on the way back from Waimea Canyon), which others on this board have commented on, that had the best coconut shrimp I have ever tasted and supposedly everything on the menu is great. Jo-Jo's Shave ice is just around the corner and you can sit on the pier at the beach and eat up that delicious treat. We also ate at the Bakery/Pizza place in Kailuea and the pizza was tasty and great desserts, but $22 for a medium pizza - ouch. Our last meal on the island was at the Hanalei Cafe at the Princeville resort. Which has a pretty good deal of your choice of any three appetizer, entree and dessert & coffee or tea for $58. My husband did not want dessert and was able to get tow appetizers. The appetizer I ordered was crab cakes ($14) and they were heavenly and I had the fish special which was a curry crusted opakapaka, veggies and rice ($33) and I had their special chocolate cake with homemade vanilla bean ice cream and a whole pile of sliced strawberries ($14) - so that was a good deal. They do get you with the over priced cocktails though. We sat on the terrace overlooking "Bali Hai" and Hanalei Bay as the sun set (you don't actually see the sun set on the North Shore). It was a magical evening (watch out for mosquitoes though).
