kaffir lime leaves found

Trillium | May 29, 2002 12:26 PM

I promised to report back on the search for lime leaves. We found them at An Dong on Powell and 54th. There were a ton of bags in the freezer next to the galangal, where you'd expect them to be. The weird thing is that this is a Chinese grocery, not a southeast Asian one, while the two southeast Asian ones we checked (Pacific Supermarket and Nam Phuong) didn't have any. I'm very tempted to go back to Nam Phuong and ask him why he told me that weird story. Anyway, they also had the dow see (preserved black beans) we couldn't find elsewhere so that was good too. Belecan and broad bean chilli paste are all that's left to hunt down.

On a related note, I was told by a Chinese colleague who's been helping me find things that his wife said to tell me that broad bean paste is illegal and you have to ask for it in the store and maybe they'll get some for you from the back. Very strange, no?

Thanks for all the help.
