Kabocha squash

Has anyone out there cooked this type of squash? I have a recipe that includes this and it says it doesn't have to be peeled!! I've looked at the squash in the market and the skin looks kind of tough, so I'm questioning the recipe--should I trust it? Or, should I follow my instincts and peel?
